What Causes Water Damage?

There are a number of ways that a home can sustain water damage, and they can come from both inside and outside of the home. They can be gradual or sudden. For example, you could have a slow leak in your roof or be impacted by a flash flood. Your water heater could burst, flooding large segments of your home all at once, or the pipe under your sink could leak just a little, gradually causing damage to cabinets and floors.

Different types of water damage call for different approaches. The water could be clean, like water from your water heater. It could be gray water, which may have come in contact with things like soap or fat and oil from cooking, or even hair or human skin. It could also be black water – water that’s come in contact with human waste, such as from a toilet or septic system. These differences affect how restoration is approached. A carpet damaged by clean water may just need to be cleaned, while a carpet contaminated by waste needs to be replaced, for example.

Some Facets of the Water Damage Remediation Process

Before our water damage restoration experts can repair the home, we have to remove the water. The longer water sits on the objects and parts of the home that are affected, the more damage it does, so speedy removal is crucial. We have many options at our disposal, including:

  • Pumping and vacuuming standing water
  • Dehumidifying to remove moisture and humidity
  • Heat technology to remove water from wood
  • Air circulation measures to improve ventilation
  • Air scrubbers to filter out and remove dust, debris, and contaminants

In some cases, badly damaged parts of the house may need demolition services. We can then rebuild those parts of the home. If the whole home is badly damaged, complete restoration could be required to restore it to its previous condition.

FAQs

Can I stay in the house after water damage?

The answer depends on the extent of the damage, but if you have standing water left in the house the answer is probably no. The water could be contaminated. If it’s high enough to reach the electrical outlets, you could be at risk of a fire. Exposure to water can also cause mold growth in a very short amount of time. At a bare minimum, the water needs to be dried before you can start thinking about returning to your home.
